Like me, my protagonist had trouble fitting in when she was younger but eventually grew to accept who she was and pave her own way. Similarly, my novel doesn’t fit in either.
The editor that reviewed my manuscript expressed how much she enjoyed my story but pointed out I may struggle to find a traditional publisher because my book doesn’t fit into one neat little category. That can be either very problematic or an opportunity to reflect on how complex real life is. How many of us can fit our life story into a single genre?
I have taken the editor’s comments on board to better structure my story but I still think it’s okay that we don’t ‘fit in’. If it turns out that traditional publishing isn’t for me, then I’m more than happy to go down the self-publishing route and share my novel with the world (paving my own way).
